John J. "Jack" McCarthy

Former Foxborough Resident

Leesburg, Fla-John J. "Jack" McCarthy III, 74, of Leesburg, Fla., a Foxborough resident of 41 years, died unexpectedly at home on Monday. He was the husband of Dorothy A. (Dowd) McCarthy, his wife of 51 years.

Born in New Haven, Conn. and raised in West Roxbury, he was the son of the late John J. McCarthy and Vera (Diana) McCarthy. He was a graduate of Boston Technical High School, and served as a corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Mr. McCarthy retired from the Boston Gas Company after 40 years of employment, having begun his career as a draftsman and retired as a field superintendent for the Central Massachusetts Division. He also was a director of the Boston Gas Credit Union for many years, and a member of the American Legion and Knights of Columbus.

Retired in Florida for the past 10 years, he continued to follow the New England Patriots and Boston Red Sox. He also was an avid golfer and a model railroad enthusiast who was instrumental in founding a model railroad club in his community.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by four daughters and their husbands, Patty and Paul Serpis, Anne and Joseph Lally, Ellen and Robert Garber and Elaine and Scott Barbato, all of Foxborough; his brother and best friend, Arthur McCarthy, and his wife, Dottie, of Leesburg, Fla. and Plymouth; and his grandchildren John, Alex, Evan Serpis, Elizabeth, Conor and Brendan Lally, Sydney, Michelle and Ryan Barbato and Griffin Garber. He was the father of the late Jack McCarthy.

Funeral Information

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend calling hours on Wednesday, June 25, 2008 from 4-8 PM at the Roberts & Sons Funeral Home, 30 South St. in Foxborough.
