Ellis F. Brown

November 08, 1913 - January 14, 2007

Retired Judge from Wrentham District Court

Judge Ellis F. Brown

Judge Ellis F. Brown, age 93, died on Sunday, January 14at his daughter’s home in Foxboro. He was the son of the late Ernest and May (Hill) Brown.

Mr. Brown was born in Roxbury on November 8, 1913. He has resided at his Lantern Lane Farm in Foxboro since the 1940’s. Mr. Brown graduated sixth in his class from Suffolk Law School, Class of 1938. He proudly served his country in the United States Army Air Corps during WWII.

Mr. Brown had a law firm on State Street in Boston. In 1967 he was appointed special justice where he had various assignments during his career as a Judge working throughout Massachusetts in district and superior courts. In 1972 he was appointed the first presiding Judge of the Wrentham District Court where he served until his retirement in 1983. Over 600 people attended his retirement dinner raising money for the May Flower Child Care Unit in Plymouth and the Kennedy Memorial Hospital in Boston.

He was the Foxboro Town Moderator from 1952-1958 and was one of the founding fathers of the Foxboro Country Club. He received the Distinguished Citizen Award from the people of Foxboro for community service. He was a member of St. Alban’s Lodge of A. F. and A. M. in Foxboro, Aleppo Shrine Mounted Patrol, Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company and the Foxboro Lions Club.

Prior to his illness he spent winters in Vero Beach, FL and summers in Gloucester.

While practicing law he was one of the first to respond to the Norfolk County Bar Associations request for volunteers to represent persons committed to the various state schools for observation but then were lost in the system. When he gained their release he had public service agencies waiting with food, clothing and shelter for them.

Ellis felt strongly that the law should be used as a mechanism for change where it could be used to reason, educate and force individuals into counseling or rehabilitation, which many notes and letters would attest, did serve to turn many lives around. He always bestowed his best sense of fairness and helped people in difficult circumstances keep their dignity.

Most of all Ellis was a great husband, father, brother, son and friend and he will be truly missed. No matter how he was feeling he always needed to be sure everyone else had what they needed. He had a strong sense of compassion and helped many people throughout his life.

Beloved husband of Muriel L. (Walters) Brown. Loving father of Susan Brown and her husband Frank Stanton of Foxboro, Chester and his wife Nancy of FL, Richard Lawson and his wife Chris of Danvers and the late Linda Diehl and Jill Brown. Also survived by nine grandchildren.
