William Yakus

November 09, 1917 - November 16, 2006

Loving husband, father and grandfather

William Yakus, age 89, died on Thursday November 16, at the Caritas Norwood Hospital surrounded by the comfort of his loving family. He was the son of the late Stanley and Helen (Gecewicz) Yakus.

William was born in South Boston on November 9, 1917 and was educated in Boston Public Schools. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during WWII and Korea. During WWII he participated in the Northern France, Germany, Ardennes and Rhineland campaigns. He received the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Ribbon, EAME Ribbon, Combat Infantry Medal and the Bronze Star.

After retiring from the U.S. Army, William became a Corrections Officer for the State of Massachusetts at Cedar Junction in Walpole. He then worked for 10 years as security officer for Gillette in South Boston.

He and his wife Sachie (Mary) were married on February 17,1956 in Yokohama, Japan and have been Foxboro residents since 1960. William was a loving and devoted husband and father and enjoyed spending time with his family. He enjoyed gardening and took pride in maintaining his property. He also enjoyed woodworking and making furniture for his family.

He was a sports fan and loved BC Eagles football and the Boston Bruins. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed deep sea fishing trips out of Gloucester. He and his wife also enjoyed traveling.

William was a member of the Foxboro American Legion Post 93 and the Foxboro V.F.W. Post 2626. He was also a member of the Order of the Purple Heart.

Beloved husband of Sachie M. (Koyama) Yakus. Loving father of Teruyo Yakus-Fullen and her husband Bernard Fullen, Jr. of Providence and Kathleen Barresi and her husband Frank of Rehoboth. Devoted grandfather of Evan and William Barresi.

Funeral Information

Family and friends are cordially invited to calling hours on Sunday, November 19 from 2 to 5 pm at the Roberts and Sons Funeral Home, 30 South Street, Foxboro. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, November 20 at 9 am at St. Mary’s Church, Carpenter Street, Foxboro. Burial to follow at the National Cemetery in Bourne, with military honors.
