Genevieve Capen Alger

September 29, 1920 - August 28, 2006

Genevieve (Felch) Capen Alger, age 85, of Mansfield, formerly of Watertown, Bedford and Thonotosassa, FL, died August 28 at Caritas Norwood Hospital, surrounded by the comfort of her loving family. She was the daughter of the late George Alfred Felch M.D.and Jane Evan (Little) Felch.

Genevieve was born in Boston on September 29, 1920 and was a graduate of Watertown High School, Class of 1938. She was the wife of the late Edward Balfour Capen and the late William Alger. She was also a graduate of Eastern Maine General Hospital Nurse Program of Bangor, ME.

Genevieve was employed by The Choate Memorial Hospital of Woburn, The Veteran’s Hospital of Bedford, MA, the Walden Nursing Home and the Rivercrest Nursing Home, both of Concord.

Genevieve was a volunteer counselor at the Metropolitan State Hospital of Waltham and also worked there with adults and children, both on a group and one to one basis. While there, she organized a public relations campaign to support community cooperation to provide necessities, luxuries and therapy for the patients.

Genevieve started the Middlesex County Mental Health Association and the League of Women’s Voters of Bedford. She was nominated in 1963 as the Massachusetts Representative for the Katherine Hamilton Volunteer of the Year Award.

Genevieve enjoyed all animals and wrighting stories and poems for children. She was a staunch advocate for the mentally ill.

Loving mother of Pamela (Capen) Webber of Foxboro, Valerie (Capen) Font of Ionia, MI and the late Douglas Winslow Capen. Beloved grandmother of twelve and great grandmother of nineteen.
