E. Allen Stroup

November 15, 1928 - February 23, 2008

Retired U.S. Coast Guard Lieutenant Commander

E. Allen Stroup, age 79, of Foxboro, Massachusetts (formerly of Mt. Lebanon, Pennsylvania and Reston, Virginia) died peacefully on Saturday, February 23, 2008. He was born in Wilmington, Delaware on November 15, 1928. He was the son of the late Earl Stroup and Alice Toner Stroup.

After graduation from Webster High School of Webster, New York in 1946, Allen received a full scholarship to attend the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York and then entered the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut graduating with the class of 1951.

Upon graduation from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, Allen served in the Coast Guard through 1955, and retired from the Coast Guard as a Lieutenant Commander. In 1952, Ensign Stroup and two others in a boarding party battled a blaze on the 82-foot dragger Evzone. After an explosion, they were forced to jump for their lives into the icy waters off Rockland, Maine. He also served with the U.S. Lighthouse service as well as in search and rescue missions.

Allen continued his education receiving two Master's degrees (Mechanical Engineering and Business) from the University of Chicago and from the University of Pittsburgh. After graduation he helped design and construct the nuclear power plant at Shippingport, Pennsylvania. Allen loved sailing, golf, reading, business, politics, and his family.

Allen married the late Elizabeth Mullen of New London, Connecticut, and is survived by his children Mary Elizabeth Vaccaro and her husband Dennis Vaccaro of Pennsylvania, Christine Stroup of Virginia, his son Jonathan Stroup and friend Chris Raffa of Foxboro and his grandchildren Nicole Vaccaro and Griffin Semple. He is also survived by his brothers Earl Stroup and Donald Stroup.

Calling hours on Tuesday, February 26 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with a service to follow at 8:00 pm at the Roberts and Sons Funeral Home, 30 South Street, Foxboro, MA.
