Leonora G. Stanley
Memorial Service for Gordon and Lee Stanley, Sunday, September 20, 2009
Born in St. Petersburg, Florida, on December 28th, 1924, Mrs. Stanley succumbed to natural causes on September 9, 2009 at the Abbey Del Ray Community Health Center, in Del Ray Beach, FL. She was the wife of Gordon H. Stanley. They were married on June 22, 1945 and were together for over 64 years. Daughter of John Lancaster Gamble and Mildred Mackey Gamble, Mrs. Stanley attended High School in Brookline, MA, then Lasell College, Newton, MA. During WWII, she worked at MIT, as an administrative assistant, helping with the research which produced the “new” technology of radar, a major factor in WWII.
Recognized as an avid volunteer, Mrs. Stanley was a board member and troop leader for the Foxboro Girl Scouts. She was also a Past Matron of the Eastern Star, Chapter 47, Order of the Eastern Star, Foxboro, MA, and served on sundry committees for Bethany Congregational Church in Foxboro. Due to her strong interests in health care, her voluntary efforts included Norwood Hospital and Sturdy Memorial Hospital, where she and her husband became board members.
A little known fact was Lee’s impressive talent as a fisherman. She raised the ire of several fellow fishermen by catching the most fish for the day. In her late 70’s she received a citation in Florida for single handedly catching a barracuda weighing over forty pounds. Her community efforts and devotion to her husband, Gordon, and the Stanley Insurance Agency, was integral to the success of his business and its contributions to several area initiatives, including the Hockomock YMCA.
She was preceded in death by her husband Gordon H Stanley (February 1, 2009) and her daughter Martha Raymond (July 20, 2002) and is survived by her son Gordon H. Stanley, Jr. of Cape Cod, daughter Lynne Iavarone of Palm Bay City, FL; grandsons David Iavarone of N. Chelmsford, MA, Jarrod Iavarone of Fort Lewis, WA; Rob Kerchner of Chicago, IL; granddaughter Melissa McDonagh of Chicago, IL, and five great grandchildren: Julian, Mckenna, Hannah, Julia, and Logan. Her family reveres her as a spirited woman with singular devotion to her children, grandchildren, and countless strangers who needed a helping hand.
