Shu-Lan Tang, age 81, of Foxboro, formerly of Taiwan, died at the Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton on July 21. She was the daughter of the late Tong-Jung Jian and Shi Song. Born May 23, 1924 in Cheng Du, Szechuan, China, she and her family fled to Taiwan with the Nationalist Party during the 1949 Communist takeover of China. In Taiwan, she was a political activist and schoolteacher with the Air Force Academy. Mrs. Tang and her family immigrated to the U.S. in 1977, residing in Foxboro for the past 28 years. As the matriarch of the Cheng-Du Restaurants in Mansfield, Westboro, and Stoughton, it was her recipes and entrepreneurial drive that established the success of her family’s pioneering efforts to bring Szechuan cuisine to this area. She was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Beloved wife of You-Wen Tang.
