Gladys A. Abel

Gladys Althea (Wing) Abel died Saturday, March 1, 2008 at Caritas Norwood Hospital surrounded by the comfort of her loving family. Born in Somerville, MA., June 14, 1911, daughter of the late Granville Elmer and Clara Ethyl Wing (Carter).

Raised in Somerville and later moved to New York, attending LPN training at a New York City Hospital. She was employed as an LPN at Deaconess Hospital in Boston. In 1963 she moved from Foxboro to Phoenix AZ, to be with her son Donald and family. There she worked as an LPN at the Scottsdale Memorial Hospital for 4 years and returned to Foxboro. She married her late husband John “Jack” William Abel on March 4, 1968 in Olney Springs, CO, where they owned and operated Olney Springs Cafe Diner. After Jack’s passing she returned to Foxboro in 1984.

Gladys loved to write poetry in which many were published. She and Jack were always ready to go on weekend jaunts and driving the camper to AZ for many winters. She spent many happy hours at the easel painting. After Jack’s death she and her sister Viola took countless drives and trips and enjoyed house-sitting. Gladys always loved spending time with her friends and always eager to lend a helpful hand. She enjoyed her walks every day and visiting with her friends on the bench and in the back lawn watching the birds. She looked forward to the weekly coffee hour at Rodman Hall which she initiated.

Loving and devoted mother of the late Donald E. Wyckoff, the late Robert F. Wyckoff and the late Barbara Jean Wyckoff. Beloved grandmother of Kimberly Jean Germaine of AZ, Steve Wyckoff of NY, Gary Wyckoff of WA, and Jeff Wyckoff of AZ, and many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Funeral Information

Friends and family are invited to attend calling hours from 5 to 8 pm on Wednesday, March 5th at the Roberts and Sons Funeral Home, 30 South Street, Foxboro. A funeral service will be held at Union Church of South Foxboro, 384 South Street Thursday March 6th at 11am. For additional information please contact 508 543-5471.
