Bettie J. Silvis

June 01, 1925 - November 21, 2011

Accomplished Seamstress

Bette J. Silvas, 86, of Allegany, NY passed away on November 21, 2011 after a long illness. Bettie was born on June 25, `925 in the Hamlet of Adrian, NY (Steuben County) and was the daughter of the late William and Florence Jenick. Bettie is predeceased by her brother Richard Alger and two sisters, Dawn Jenick and Alice Jenick Johnson, A loving brother, Robert L. Jenick of Allegany, survives. Bettie graduated from Olean High School in 1944. She was married to J. Leigh Harris (deceased) and later married Harry W. Silvas (deceased).

Bettie, our loving and kind mother, is survived by five children: Stanley R. Harris of Phoenix, AZ, Patti I. Harris of Foxborough, Jeffrey B. Harris of Naples, NY; ten grandchildren (Julie, Brent, Gwen, Greg Leigh, Colby, Arielle, Joshua, Nate and Hunter); and four great grandchildren (Dallas, Devan, McKinlee and Madigan).

Bettie was an accomplished seamstress. Throughout her life she sewed for others always bringing a smile to those who received her hand-crafted gifts. Bettie won Grand Prize at the New York State Fair for one of her beautiful, handmade Victorian quilts. Bettie was also an avid bowler and a fulltime mom.

Funeral Information

The family will hold a private gathering for immediate family and close friends to honor and celebrate the life and memory of Bettie.

Donations Information

In lieu of flowers, the family would respectfully request that a donation be made (in Bettie’s name) to the Olean First Baptist Church, 133 S. Union Street, Olean, NY 14760. All donations in Bettie’s name will be applied towards the “Community Warmth” project who’s objective is to provide handmade, quilted or purchased blankets to local area families who are need of warmth this winter.
