Ernie Portway

January 13, 1930 - September 02, 2010

Foxborough-Portway, Ernest W., age 80, died unexpectedly at Caritas Norwood Hospital on Thursday, September 2, 2010. He was the son of the late Wilfred and Diana (Boisvert) Portway.

Ernie was born on January 13, 1930 in Providence, RI. He was a graduate of Fairhaven High School, Class of 1948 and he attended the Rhode Island Radio School. He married his wife Olive “Betty” (deLacy) at Sacred Heart Church in Fairhaven on May 19, 1951. Ernie proudly served his country in the US Army during the Korean War. He was employed as a lab supervisor at Draper Labs/MIT in Cambridge.

Ernie was an avid Red Sox fan, enjoyed golfing and refurbishing golf clubs which he sold from his home. He enjoyed walking and watching his grandchildren play sports and enjoyed reading and doing puzzles at the Boyden Library. Ernie was a family man and cherished his wife, children and grandchildren.

Beloved husband of Olive “Betty” E. (deLacy) Portway. Loving father of Donna and her husband Peter Bowditch of Foxborough, David and his wife Kathleen Portway of North Attleboro, Carol and her husband Mark MacLeod of Middleboro, Coreen and her husband Charles Cirone of Norton, Gary and his wife Kathy Portway of Norton and Gail and her husband David Carter of Plainville. Devoted grandfather of thirteen and great grand father of six. Brother of Alfred Portway of Myrtle Beach, SC, Robert Portway of Tabernacle, NJ and the late Dorothy Gomes.

Funeral Information

Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Wednesday, September 8 from 4 to 8 pm at the Roberts and Sons Funeral Home, 30 South Street, Foxborough. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home at 11 am on Thursday, September 9. Interment with military honors to follow at Rock Hill Cemetery, Foxborough.
