Donald Hedges Beggs

May 28, 1920 - February 12, 2007

Owner of Morse & Beggs Monument Company

Donald H. “Bud” Beggs, age 86, died unexpectedly on Monday, February 12, at Sturdy Memorial Hospital, Attleboro, surrounded by the comfort of his loving family. He was the husband of the late Irene C. (Morse) Beggs and son of the late Thomas and Barbara (Hedges) Beggs.

Born in Foxboro on May 28, 1920, he graduated from Foxboro High School in 1938. He proudly served his country in WW II, in the United States Army Air Corps, famous Flying Tigers squadron and participated in the China-Burma-India Theatre.

He was a toolmaker at the Foxboro Company for over 25 years, resigning on June 10, 1966, to work full-time in their family monument business, established in 1938 by his father-in-law. Both he and his wife owned and operated Morse & Beggs Monument Company in N. Attleboro for over 40 years. Mr. Beggs erected many memorials that can be found in the cemeteries and parks in N. Attleboro, Foxboro and neighboring towns.
He is a member of the New England Monument Dealers Assn., and the Monument Builders of N. America.

Donald enjoyed hunting and fishing, and was a member of the Independent Sportmen’s Club of Foxboro. He was an avid golfer and a member at Highland Country Club in Attleboro. As a young man, he was a roller-skating dance instructor in Norwood, and taught horseback riding in Foxboro, to the Wheaton College students.

As a Mason for many years, he maintained his membership in the Bristol Lodge A.F. & A.M., the Rabboni Royal Arch Chapter, and the Angle Stone Chapter #118 O.E.S. of N. Attleboro. He was a Shriner, and a member of the Rhode Island Shrine, King Phillip Shrine of Taunton and Venice Shrine in Florida.

He was a member of the China-Burma-India Cape Cod Basha and Punta Gorda Basha.
In addition to his winter residence in Venice, Florida, he enjoyed visits to his home in Harwich.

Donald is survived by a daughter, Donna, and her husband, John Ricker of Foxboro, special friend, Winifred Darlington of Foxboro, and a niece, Linda Lee Beggs of Sandwich. He was the brother of the late Deane Beggs.

Funeral Information

Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Friday, March 2 from 2-4 & 7-9pm, with a Masonic Service to be held at 8pm at the Roberts & Sons Funeral Home, 30 South St., Foxboro. Interment will be private.
