Obituary: Edward F. Devine

Edward F. Devine

February 18, 1921 - November 30, 2008

Edward F. Devine, 87, died Sunday, Nov. 30 at Caritas Norwood Hospital after a period of declining health. He was the husband of Virginia L. (Gould) Devine, whom he married on Jan. 16, 1943.

Born in Norwood on Feb. 18, 1921, he was a son of the late John Henry Devine and Margaret (Ryan) Devine and had lived in Foxboro his entire life.

A 1938 graduate of Foxboro High School who attended Northeastern University for three years, he worked much of his life in the automotive industry, and was the founder and owner of Devine’s Motor Sales.

The business was initially situated on a Central Street site currently occupied by the Foxboro Mobil station, and subsequently was relocated across the street, where a new Lincoln-Mercury dealership was constructed. That complex, including the showroom and extensive garage area, was later converted for use as professional offices.

During World War II he worked as a machinist at The Foxboro Company in the manufacture of guidance systems for torpedoes and, prior to retiring, had worked as a mechanic for Amtrak for several years.

He also served as a call firefighter in Foxboro in the days when the professional full-time force was supplemented by volunteers.

In his retirement, he continued to repair cars for family and friends in his garage on Chestnut Street. He also enjoyed woodworking, canning produce from his garden, and hosting chowder parties in his basement.

In addition to his wife of 65 years, he is survived by four daughters, Karen Kaiser, Nancy Whitehouse and Janice Kennedy, all of Foxboro, and Jeanne Pasqualini of New London, Conn.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Richard, Bernard, Joseph and Frederick Devine, Helen Dugas and Agnes Stevens.
